Barrels

When choosing a barrel you should understand the differences between barrel sizes and types, to be able to choose the right barrel for the Job.
Sizes
Barrels come any an infinite number of sizes, we split these into three categories;

  • Jumbo barrels are any barrels measuring taller than 38 inches.
  • Regular barrels are between 27 and 38 inches tall.
  • Small any barrels shorter than 27 inches are considered Small.

It is recommended that you send the largest barrel in the category. Meaning a barrel 32 inches tall will cost the same to send as a barrel 38 inches tall, as they both fall into the regular size category.

Types
There are three basic types of barrels Plastic, Steel, and Cardboard

  • Plastic Barrels are useful in that they may be re-used for water, or other types of storage. They are more expensive and there isn't much variety. Most plastic barrels are beveled at the top and bottom, decreasing their overall capacity.

  • Steel Drums may also be re-used, but might rust if the barrel is dented causing the paint to chip. They too are more expensive, but are easier to find. Steel Drums are the strongest barrel, which means they can carry the most weight.

  • Cardboard Barrels are of little use after shipping but are relatively inexpensive and very common. When choosing a cardboard barrel it is best to first decide what types of items you are sending. Heavy items should be sent in a barrel that is heavier (has thicker sides), and should also have a steel bottom. Lighter items may be sent in larger barrels with cardboard bottoms.

C A U T I O N - Many barrels that you may find, are used or second hand. When buying a used barrel, make sure that the barrel is not damaged due to denting, cutting or water. (Water damage can be seen by a discoloring of the cardboard) Also beware of Cable barrels; these barrels were previously used to ship cable wiring they are fitted with a cone in the center of the barrel that the cable wraps into. When these barrels are resold, the cone is ripped out, weakening the bottom of the barrel. We do not recommend using these barrels.

Packing

When packing your materials for shipment there are many things that you must take into consideration. Each varies according to which type of package you are sending.
Barrels
Should be packed by placing all the heavier non-fragile items at the bottom. Any breakable items should be carefully wrapped and placed in the center to protect them from harm. If you are sending any liquid items, try not to send glass bottles, plastic bottles are safer. Tape the tops of the bottles on, to reduce the risk of them opening up when shifted or moved. All light clothing items should be packed at the top of the barrel as this is the part the experiences the most movement.

Cartons
Should be packed in much the same way as a barrel. Do not use odd shaped cartons, as you are paying for cubic footage, therefore you should pick a box with flat sides. The best cartons are old Electronics or computer cartons, as these are the strongest. To securely close the carton be sure to re-tape the bottom, and tape down any open flaps. We do not suggest strapping cartons closed, as straps may rip through the cardboard.

Crates
If you are using an old crate, make sure that it is still sturdy. When building a crate, place the support beams on the inside to improve your volume. Before you build your crate make sure that if you build it indoors, it will be able to fit through the door to get out. Heavier crates over 300 lbs., should have runners along the bottom for forklift handling. It is strongly recommended that Televisions and other electronics be crated for shipment.

Pallets
Are useful when you are sending many small boxes, such as tile boxes. Arrange the boxes to best fit on the pallet by, squaring it off.

image of a measuring tape To measure your items you will need a measuring tape that has inch measurements, like this one. (A seamstress tape can also be used, but is not very accurate)

Follow these simple instructions to get the length, heights, and width of your package, copy down the number of inches (ex. 39 inches, not 3 feet, 3 inches) for each side.
